Fine art students give back to their art programs

The City of Santa Clarita’s Arts & Events Council held a reception and Awards Ceremony on October 14th in Santa Clarita.  The evening celebrated the winners from this year’s “Art on Canvas” and “Through the Lens” contests, which were featured at this year’s Street Art Festival.  This annual art competition is open to residents of the Santa Clarita Valley from Kindergarten through the Professional level.  Not only is this contest a great way for local artists to display their work in a public setting, but it is also a chance to give back to art education. The prize money was awarded to the winners as well as the schools they attend, in an effort to help boost art programs.

“We are so proud of our students,” said Sarah Bukowsky, Children’s Program Director of Mission: Renaissance Fine Art Classes in Valencia. “In all, sixteen Mission: Renaissance students were displayed at the event, and we had quite a few winners.”

Sarah, herself, won both first place and the people’s choice award in the professional category. “I think with budget cuts taking art education out of schools, I think now, more than ever the arts need support.  I thank the City of Santa Clarita for their support of the arts,” she said after receiving her awards.

Laura Frazier, Program Director for the adult classes at Mission: Renaissance, was awarded second place in the professional category. She said, “I am always amazed at what our students accomplish, and I’m so glad the city has provided an event for local artists to show what they can do. We’re already looking forward to next year.”

Established in 1975, MISSION:RENAISSANCE is today the world’s largest fine art program for children, teens, and adults with more than 2000 students attending classes each week.  For more information visit: http://www.fineartclasses.com
