The City of Santa Clarita’s Arts & Events Council held its annual “Art On Canvas” competition recently. The contest is a great way for local artists to be recognized for their contribution to the art community.  But, more importantly, it is an opportunity to contribute to art education.  The winners in the various grade categories from K thru 12 receive prize money along with the academic school they attend.

MISSION: RENAISSANCE, as the premier art program in the Santa Clarita Valley, knows the tremendous benefit of art to the overall academic development of students.  Each year, they encourage their students to enter the “Art On Canvas” Competition, knowing that much of the prize money will end up bolstering the art programs in their local schools.  “It’s a win for everyone,” stated Sarah Bukowsky, Children’s Program Director for the Valencia Studio.  “The kid’s are thrilled to be honored for their hard work and their school’s receive much needed help for their art programs.”

This year, the following MISSION: RENAISSANCE students were chosen from over 800 entries to be among the top 20 in each grade category and to be featured at the January Art Walk in Newhall:  Chloe Johnson, Tia Bakhaya, Amanda Kubasak, Megan Espiritu, and Tabitha Branda.  In addition to that honor, Cassidy Oliver was voted People’s Choice Winner in the 5th – 8th grade category and Ria Bakhaya was awarded 2nd place in the K-4th grade group.  Among the professional entries, the following MISSION: RENAISSANCE students were in the top ten and displayed at the March Art Walk in Newhall:  Kristi Cantillo and Heather Dubois.  Taking home 2nd and 3rd place respectively were MISSION:RENAISSANCE Program Directors, Sarah Bukowsky, and Laura Frazier.

Established in 1975, MISSION: RENAISSANCE is today the world’s largest fine art program for children, teens, and adults with more than 2000 students attending classes each week.  For more information visit: www.fineartclasses.com.
