World-class line-up of speakers scheduled to appear at 2010 NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

Top experts in the worlds of cyber security, homeland security and national defense are slated to appear at this year’s NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM on Homeland Security and Defense™, Oct. 27-29 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo.
 
Sept. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- Top experts in the worlds of cyber security, homeland security and national defense are slated to appear at this year’s NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM on Homeland Security and Defense™, Oct. 27-29 at the Broadmoor.  Experts include Janet Napolitano, Secretary, Department of Homeland Security; Admiral James Winnefeld, Jr., commander of U.S. Northern Command; Mr. Jeff Moss, Director of international cyber security firm Black Hat; Mr. Don Proctor, CEO of Cisco Systems, and many others.

General Norton A Schwartz, Air Force Chief of Staff, will be the opening day keynote speaker, October 27, 2010. As Chief of Staff, General Schwartz serves as the senior uniformed Air Force officer responsible for the organization, training and equipping of 680,000 active-duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian forces serving in the United States and overseas. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the general and other service chiefs function as military advisers to the Secretary of Defense, National Security Council and the President.

Major General Dale Meyerrose (USAF, ret.) General Meyerrose is Vice President and General Manager of Cyber  and Information Assurance for the Harris Corporation.  He is responsible for leading all aspects of strategy, business development, and program execution for Harris Corporation’s Cyber and Information Assurance business. In addition, he oversees the Harris Center for Information Assurance at the Florida Institute of Technology and its associated research programs.  Prior to his current position, Meyerrose was the first president-appointed, Senate-confirmed chief information officer and information sharing executive for the U.S. Intelligence Community in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.  He will speak Oct. 27.

Mr. Don Proctor, CEO of Cisco Systems will also speak Oct. 27 on “Building an Architecture of Trust: The Network’s Role in Securing Cyberspace.” Under Mr. Proctor’s leadership, Cisco's voice business became the second of the company’s six initial advanced technology areas to surpass the US$1B annual revenue milestone, moving Cisco from an early innovator in the VoIP market to one of the top three global suppliers of enterprise voice solutions.

Janet Napolitano, Secretary, Department of Homeland Security, will speak on Thursday, October 28.  Secretary Napolitano’s comments at the Symposium will address military leaders, homeland security professionals, and industry experts on cyber security, infrastructure resiliency, and energy enterprise protection. Dealing with these issues is at the core of the Department’s role in leading the concerted national effort to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards.

Lieutenant General Robert Schmidle, Deputy Commander, U.S. Cyber Command, will give a keynote speech to the symposium on Oct. 28.  U.S. Cyber Command plans, coordinates, integrates, synchronizes, and conducts activities to: direct the operations and defense of specified Department of Defense information networks and; prepare to, and when directed, conduct full-spectrum military cyberspace operations in order to enable actions in all domains, ensure US/Allied freedom of action in cyberspace and deny the same to our adversaries.

Dr. Paul Stockton, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Americas’ Security Affairs. He will speak on Oct. 28.  Dr. Stockton is responsible for the supervision of homeland defense activities, defense support of civil authorities, and Western Hemisphere security affairs for the Department of Defense.

Major General Richard Webber is commander of the 24th Air Force.  Headquartered in San Antonio, TX, 24th Air Force is the operational warfighting organization that establishes, operates, maintains and defends Air Force networks and conducts full-spectrum operations in cyberspace. It establishes, operates and defends Air Force networks to ensure warfighters can maintain the information advantage as we prosecute military operations. The unit is responsible to conduct the full range of cyber operations. He will speak Oct. 28.

Former Secretary of the Air Force and NASA astronaut, Dr. Ronald Sega, will add his expertise to a panel discussion on energy infrastructure security Oct. 28.  Dr. Sega is currently serving as the Woodward Professor of Systems Engineering at Colorado State University and is the Vice President for Energy, Environment and Applied Research with Colorado State University Research Foundation. He also serves as special advisor to the Colorado State University president for energy and the environment. He most recently was the under secretary of the Air Force from 2005-2007 where he led the Air Force team that won the overall Presidential Award for Leadership in Federal Energy Management for 2006.

Mr. Jeff Moss, Founder and Director of Black Hat, will also address the symposium on Oct. 28. Mr. Moss is becoming one of the most sought-after voices in information security. He has spent the last 17 years as founder and director of Black Hat and DefCon, two of the most important security conferences in the world. Moss is uniquely qualified with his ability to bridge the gap between the underground researcher community and law enforcement, between the worlds of pure research and responsible application.

Admiral  James A. Winnefeld, Jr., Commander of NORAD and US Northern Command, will be the closing speaker on Oct. 29.  Admiral Winnefeld assumed command of NORAD/US NORTHCOM on May 19, 2010.  USNORTHCOM defends America's homeland — protecting our people, national power, and freedom of action. He will speak on Oct. 29.
