The UK’s number one fish and chip retailers, George’s Tradition, are campaigning for St George’s Day to be made a public holiday.

April 9, 2010 - PRLog -- The UK’s number one fish and chip retailers, George’s Tradition, are campaigning for St George’s Day to be made a public holiday, so that everyone who is part of England can celebrate everything that’s great about our country – our history, our heritage, and our traditions.

Northern Ireland has celebrated St Patrick’s Day with a public holiday since 1903, and the Scottish Parliament has recently made St Andrew’s Day a voluntary public holiday in Scotland.  The Welsh Assembly agree that St David’s Day should be celebrated in Wales with a  public holiday, so it’s only right that England should follow suit and mark our patron saint’s day officially.  England currently ties with Wales with eight bank holidays per year, but we’re lagging way behind the rest of the UK, with Scotland and Northern Ireland enjoying a whopping ten days per year!

Andrew Constantinou, Managing Director of George’s Tradition explains: ‘England is a great country with exceptional heritage and history.  We should be proud of this and we should have the opportunity to celebrate.  Also, we all lead such busy lives nowadays it’s great every now and then to take some time out, relax, and spend some time with families and loved ones, and a public holiday gives us the opportunity to do this – and of course there’s no better way to celebrate everything English than with some First Class Traditional Fish and Chips!’

George’s Tradition will be collecting signatures on petitions in all eight of their shops from 19th – 25th April 2010, and submitting the petitions to local MP’s.  Andrew Constantinou adds ‘This isn’t the first campaign for St George’s Day to be made a public holiday – people have been calling for this for years, but we’re hoping that we can collect enough signatures to get the government to listen.  It may seem trivial in the scheme of things and with an election coming up, but this is an important issue – we should be proud to be English and have the opportunity to celebrate – and that applies to everyone who lives in, or is part of England.  We feel it’s our responsibility as a famous George to get behind this cause!’

From 19th – 25th April you’ll see every George’s Tradition decorated with St George’s cross, and to help you celebrate they’ll be serving a special family meal offer all week, encouraging people to think traditional, enjoy traditional English food and spend time enjoying the company of families and loved ones across the generations.

George’s Tradition of serving great fish and chips is long established. In fact, the company began as a family business back in 1967. It’s still run on the same basis today, only on a much larger scale.
