Being Straight with Management and Employees; The Impact of My Communication

Does your tone, body language and the words you use really convey what you mean?

Jan. 21, 2010 - PRLog -- The holiday gauntlet has been run.  For better or worse, hopefully better, we’ve come out on the other side in a new year, a new decade.  After the past 2 years of economic disaster, anticipations and expectations are higher than ever.  So…  How, as corporate leaders, do we make certain that everyone is on the right track?

Communication.  Sure, that’s the no-brainer answer.  Unfortunately it turns out that ‘communication’ is much easier said than done.  What we say vs. what we mean often gets lost in translation.

Michael Hahn, CEO of Beyond The Good Life and professional team relationship coach points out that everyone gives and receives information differently.  “People create connections to information on a personal level.  Some are more emotional, others more visual and others focus more on auditory connections.”

The ability for management and employees to be straight forward, clear and concise with each other is crucial to moving forward, up and out as companies gain economic ground in the new decade.  A re-tooling of corporate communication is needed.  Understanding these different styles of communication and the urgency of change, Michael created the team training course, How to Effectively Communicate With Integrity and Influence.

“Discussing communication issues within an organization can be very intimate and sensitive” says Janet, senior manager of a human resources department with a Chicago-land area company.  “The communication style of our department needed to change in order to meet our business needs.  Our HR team needs to hold our employees with consideration and encourage them to develop a relationship with us.  We need to be more than an information hotline [and] not just quote the employment handbook.”

Janet had attended a couple of seminars/workshops presented by Michael.  During a session on relationships, she realized what Michael was talking about, building relationships through communication, was exactly what her HR team needed.

Janet continued, “We needed to highlight relationships, not just be a handbook directory service.  I knew that a communication course would help us achieve that goal”.  She knew that in order to achieve their goal for 2010, to develop relationships with their employees, their team needed a foundation.

“Michael’s communication course gave us a starting point.  Through his interactive coaching our team learned that we need to consider the needs of our employees.  We need to ask ourselves how our communication will be received, to really think before we just recite policy or write that next memo.  His [Michael Hahn] course helped us build the bridge that will connect us to our goal.”

Janet is dedicated to the goal of their HR team, cultivating real relationships with fellow employees and becoming a true internal service department for their company.  “This was very beneficial.  We’re looking forward to having Michael back for more in depth training.”  Janet described Michael's training is different because he creates "Live" experiences.  Janet explained that the interactivity allowed her team to experiment with the new concepts learned during the course.

Getting your message across clearly, concisely and in the spirit it is intended is crucial to the growth of any organization.  When you’re answering a question or giving instruction, what does your body language say?  What comes across in the tone of your voice and the words you use?  Is it more than you really intended?  Less?  Being straight in communication between employees and management is a lot more than just saying what you think you mean.
