Chia Seeds - An Amazing "New" Super Food

Recently rediscovered as an amazingly nutritious super-food, chia seeds are rapidly becoming a staple in the diet of health conscious consumers.

Nov. 6, 2008 - PRLog -- If you haven't already heard, chia seeds are one of the most nutritious, powerful super foods on the planet. Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber, loaded with antioxidants, full of protein, and the richest natural source of omega-3. Chia seeds are an easy to eat, tiny whole grain that can be consumed in a variety of ways and by people of all ages. If chia seeds are not a part of your daily diet, it's time to make the change and start eating chia seeds every day!

Chia seeds were first used by several South American cultures, most notably the Aztecs, thousands of years ago. Chia was a staple in their diet and was revered as a fantastic source of energy for warriors on long journeys. It was said that a single handfull of chia seeds could sustain a person for an entire day without eating anything else because of the immense amount of nutrition that is packed into this tiny seed. Chia seeds were also known as "running food" because of the natural energy boost that is felt and their ability to keep a person hydrated for prolonged periods of time. After the Spanish invasion of South America, chia seeds were almost completely wiped out but a few scattered fields were preserved, and chia seeds have now been rediscovered as one of the most important additions to the modern diet.

Believe it or not, gram for gram, chia seeds have 8 times more omega-3 than salmon, 5 times more antioxidants than blueberries, 3 times more fiber than bran flakes, and 2 times more calcium than milk! If you are a fan of flax seeds then you definitely need to think about switching over to chia. Aside from having a higher content of omega-3, fiber, protein, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals than flax seeds, chia seeds are easily digestible and do not need to be ground up in order to eat them. Chia seeds also have such a high concentration of antioxidants, that they won't go rancid like flax and have a shelf life of over 5 years. Chia seeds can easily be sprinkled on cereal, salad, sandwiches, soup, smoothies, and added to just about any food because the taste of the seeds is so mild that it hardly affects the flavor of the food it's being added to. Chia seeds can even be enjoyed as a stand alone snack that has a very mild nutty flavor!

Do yourself a favor and give chia seeds a try! They're great for your health and are an easy way to make everything you eat more nutritious. For more information about the wonderful aspects of chia seeds, check out http://www.TheChiaSeed.com
