Michael R. Varble & Associates, P.C. Secures Additional $60K in Ongoing Beekman Scandal Recovery

HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. - Nov. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- The recovery brings the amount that Town of Beekman Attorney Michael R. Varble, Esq. has recovered to roughly $500,000—nearly 90% of the initial lost sum. Varble and his firm continue to negotiate and are preparing for litigation with insurance companies to secure the remaining funds.

Earlier this year, Fred Knapp pleaded guilty to embezzling approximately $539,000 from the Town’s budget during his time as Beekman's comptroller. After he had left the position, it was found that he used town credit accounts to pay for personal travel. Knapp is currently serving three to nine years in prison.

Town of Beekman Attorney Michael R. Varble, Esq. has been hard at work since the scandal broke to negotiate with Beekman's insurance providers. In October, he was able to deliver $440K back to the Town.

The latest recovery of $59,121.06 fulfils Beekman’s policy limit with one insurer, Zurich, while the firm continues to negotiate with New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal—another insurer that the Town had a policy with. Michael R. Varble & Associates, P.C. is also preparing for litigation against O’Connor Davies LLP, an accounting firm who failed to detect Knapp’s embezzlement for the Town during 2011 and 2012 audits.

The swift recovery of funds has been a relief for the Town, who has not suffered a credit rating downgrade from Moody's or any other credit-oriented consequences due to the theft. Last month, both Town Supervisor Barbara Zulauf and Comptroller Andrew Forman both praised the speed at which the lost funds were recovered due to Varble's efforts.
