HAYWARD, Calif. - Sept. 23, 2015 - PRLog -- Iota Beta Sigma, the Silicon Valley alumnae chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., announced they will host a fundraiser to draw attention to breast cancer awareness in the African American community. The event, “Hattie’s High Tea and Hat Party”, will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 12 noon at the Golden Tea Garden, 22630 Main Street in Hayward, Calif.

The fun-filled afternoon event will raise money for the Stanford Cancer Institute’s Community Partnership Program (SCI-CCP), which supports breast cancer outreach, education and advocacy efforts. The fundraiser will include high tea service, a festive “best hat” contest, raffle prizes and a pop-up Stella & Dot fashion jewelry boutique. As well, the event will feature breast cancer survivor ambassadors who will speak about their personal journeys to recovery.

Hattie’s High Tea and Hat Party honors Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority member, legendary Hollywood actress Hattie McDaniel, who lost her battle to breast cancer in 1952. She is best known for her role as “Mammy” in Gone With the Wind, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first African American to win the award.

Cognizant that African Americans bear a disproportionate burden of cancer – the highest mortality rate of any ethnic group – Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is committed to providing education on and active support of early detection, as well as research for the prevention and cure of breast, prostate, ovarian, colon and other types of cancers.

Tickets for the “Hattie’s High Tea and Hat Party” fundraiser are $35 per person. The event is open to the public – tickets must be purchased in advance. The sorority chapter is also accepting monetary donations to further support their philanthropic efforts, and to help sponsor breast cancer survivors and patients, along with teens and college students to attend the event for free.
