Here is a look at five details you may not know about this sports car that is arousing so much interest. Limited Production Interest is high but production is based on “demand minus one,” according to Ted Klaus, head of Project NSX. He calls it small volume one-by-one production, appropriate for mid-range but pricey sports car. Exclusivity is a common marketing strategy for high-end cars. Appealing to elitism and being one of the chosen is a common thread with sports cars in this class, including the Ferrari 488 GTB, Audi R8 and the BMW I8. The car is being built at the Acura NSX Marysville, Ohio assembly plant. The company has no plans to add more workers or shifts to increase production. Lowest Center of Gravity The 2016 Acura model has the engine and its components sitting as low as is feasible in the chassis, giving it the lowest center of gravity for this type of sports car. Engineers were able to design it this way by using Acura NSX Advanced Sports Package technology that also utilizes a V-angle at 75 degrees and a dry sump that enhances the engine’s rigidity. Updated V6 Engine The twin-turbo V6 engine is mounted longitudinally and has a 3.5-liter displacement. The regular internal combustion engine is used in conjunction with three electric motors. Two of the motors in this hybrid system deliver power to the front axle. Overall the Acura NSX will have 550 horsepower, letting it go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds or less. It is made with a dual-clutch transmission with nine speeds. New Manufacturing Methods The Acura NSX uses a design based on a multi-material space frame, which gives it extra rigidity and less weight. According to Acura, it is the most rigid in its class. The 2016 NSX uses a new method of casting called ablation technology. This lets the manufacturer use extra-rigid castings within the crush zones. What this greater rigidity means for drivers is better handling, an important feature in a fast sports car. Feel Like a Race Driver The steering wheel in the 2016 NSX looks and feels like it is straight out of an Indy 500 machine. The bottom is flattened, as well as the top, and the instruments are clustered. The center console is sporty and stylish. The interior colors are black and red with two-tone upholstery.
