The Drusilla Campbell Scholorship and Outreach Matching Fund Is More Than Halfway Toward Its Goal

As the San Diego writing community mourns the loss of one of its successful leaders, Drusilla Campbell, who passed away on October 24, 2014, San Diego Writers, Ink (SDWI) is honoring her legacy with efforts to match a $5,000 donation given in her name. The Drusilla Campbell Scholarship and Outreach fund will make SDWI classes available to people in the community who cannot afford to take classes, to expand programming to other parts of San Diego, and gain a larger regional presence.

Drusilla was on the board of SDWI, wrote many popular books like Blood Orange, The Good Sister, and her last book In Doubt, and taught writing classes. The $5,000 pledge was presented at a September 2014 reading of portions of her In Doubt novel at Writers, Ink.

The www.sandiegowriters.org website shares an example of one of the ways past efforts like these has helped people.

“In August, poetry instructor Jim Moreno partnered with SDWI to bring the first annual Jihmye Collins Summer Poetry Camp to Malcolm X Library in Southeast San Diego. One of Jim’s students, Noemi, an 18-year old high school student, took to poetry. A few weeks after the summer camp, Noemi had a poem published in the San Diego Poetry Annual. Quite a feat for a first time author! The SDWI program made this possible.”
