PHOENIX - Sept. 23, 2014 - PRLog -- Shade Projects proudly presents “The Terrible Mess We Woke Up In” the solo exhibition of Daniel Funkhouser in Bokeh Gallery at the monOrchid. This exhibition showcases a brand new series of portraits of both the artist and close people in his life. Utilizing paint and photographic media, these portraits continue the artist’s exploration of the gray areas of contemporary identity. These portraits are “playful yet severe, autobiographical yet universal, these works diversely cross representations and expectations of gender, sexuality, history and the hidden worlds of illness and growth” says Funkhouser.

A former member of the Eye Lounge Artist Collective and has exhibited his work throughout the valley. Previously Funkhouser was included in the Phoenix New Times “100 Creative Forces in Phoenix” list. Creating and experimenting with a wide range of art all connected by the artist’s unified love of lurid color palette, dramatic imagery, and engrossing themes of identity, gender, family, and childhood memory. Take time to examine Funkhouser’s multicolor and complicated world through his truly captivating portraits, says Curator Nicole Royse, who also hopes viewers will be compelled to contemplate these difficult topics further.

“The Terrible Mess We Woke Up In” will be on display in Bokeh Gallery at the monOrchid from October 3rd until November 1st, 2014. The opening reception will be held on First Friday, October 3rd from 6-10pm with the artist in attendance.
