Dallas Chamber Symphony Announces 2014-2015 Season

DALLAS - Aug. 7, 2014 - PRLog -- The Dallas Chamber Symphony is pleased to announce the details of its 2014-2015 season. Patrons of the organization should expect a season of collaboration and innovation as it expands from four concerts to five, thanks to a partnership with the Video Association of Dallas to co-present Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger on opening night of VideoFest 27 (Oct. 8).

Coming right off of its Best of Big D 2014 award for “Best Way to Watch a Silent Film,” the DCS will continue its popular silent film series with a screening of Harold Lloyd’s Bumping Into Broadway. (Feb. 17). The orchestra will also present its Third Annual Dallas International Piano Competition in March at SMU with a new panel of renowned adjudicators. For its season finale, the orchestra will host the Second Annual Sight of Sound International Film Competition. (April 28).

“The DCS has gained a reputation and following for providing audiences with classical music experiences that are unlike any other in the area,” says Richard McKay, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Dallas Chamber Symphony.  “These events, along with traditional chamber orchestral programs in September and November, promise to bring a rich variety of musical experiences to North Texas audiences at the City Performance Hall.”

In addition to its concerts and competitions, the DCS will also expand upon its educational programming initiatives in North Texas schools. Through its TEKS-aligned digital textbooks, musician visits, classroom videoconferences and interactive concerts, the DCS will be introducing thousands of children to the performing arts.

Kazuhiro Takagi returns for his second year as concertmaster of the DCS as it opens its season with captivating performances of two compositional retrospectives, both with twentieth-century flair. Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite features gorgeous renaissance melodies with Celtic influence, and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 presents two fantastic soloists. Pianist Alex McDonald performs with Oscar Garcia Montoya on trumpet, as they deliver a captivating rendition of the composer’s neo-baroque masterpiece. The evening concludes with Dvorak’s romantic and familiar Serenade for Strings.

This concert gives you a front row seat to opening night of VideoFest 27 as we screen Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller, The Lodger. This newly released masterpiece is visually pristine, and you’ll experience it in the best way imaginable, as the orchestra performs a new musical score by Douglas Pipes live-to-film.

Presenting not one, but two amazing soloists, this concert is sure to impress. Violinist Chloé Trevor is sure to dazzle on The Lark Ascending, as you’ll experience some of Vaughan-Williams’ most powerful evocative pastoral writings. The solo will be followed by Charles Ives’ rarely performed, yet equally bucolic, Symphony No. 3, “The Camp Meeting”. The orchestra also welcomes Kyle Orth, winner of the Dallas International Piano Competition 2014, to perform Mozart’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor.

The DCS continues its popular silent film series with a live-to-film performance of a newly commissioned score for Harold Lloyd’s hilarious classic, Bumping Into Broadway. The DCS also performs the Appalachian Spring Suite, one of Copland’s most popular and enduring classics.

Concert 5: Sight of Sound 2015

April 28, 2014 at 8pm – Dallas City Performance Hall

The season concludes with selections from the second annual Sight of Sound International Film Competition. Sponsored in part by the Video Association of Dallas, we will debut entries from filmmakers across the globe who have created new visual art for pairing with classical music. This year we are exploring music by Grieg, Pärt, Vivaldi, Elgar, Schubert and others. Final details of the program will be announced later this year.
