DENVER - Feb. 6, 2014 - PRLog -- The experts at EFI Polymers recognize the need to keep technology moving forward, and protection from environmental factors like heat, moisture, cold and dust has never been more important. Sensitive (SMT) electronics that are exposed to demanding outdoor environments are extremely difficult to protect.

Investing heavily in their environmental testing program and accompanying tools, EFI Polymers is proud to showcase their newest thermal-cycling chamber. Capable of controlling temperatures from -68C to 180C, and humidity from 10% to 98%, the chamber allows the engineers to design and run accelerated environmental tests. The rigorous testing helps draw conclusions about the complex interactions between the sensitive electronics, the sealant and protective materials, and the environmental factors applied.

Recent research concluded that there are two main factors contributing to environmental testing failures. The first culprit is the breaking or cracking of solder joints, bonds or components due to discrepancies in contraction and expansion (CTE) rates of potting materials. The second is exposure to moisture, usually ingressing through the points in casing where wires exit the potting material, or from cracks that developed during thermal cycling.

Having come to these conclusions about common failures due to environmental stressors, the engineers of EFI Polymers are able to modify their materials accordingly and work with clients to design components that will work together to provide long term, reliable protection to sensitive electronics.
