Huntington Beach Comes Together to Raise Money for Drowning Prevention

On December 13, 2013, the non-profit the International Surf Lifesaving Association (ISLA) hosted a holiday party to raise money for Drowning Prevention.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Dec. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Founded in 2008, ISLA’s mission is to prevent drowning worldwide by building a culture of water safety. Comprised entirely of volunteers; the organization provides training, medical supplies, disaster relief, and emergency personnel to communities in need around the world.

The event was hosted at 5th Street Bar and Grill in Huntington Beach and included a show by local band, Under the Covers. Active Ride Shop and RipCurl were among the donors for the event. Over $500 was raised through the cover charge and raffle. Gift baskets included: apparel and accessories from Active Ride Shop, Rip Curl, and ISLA. Winners from the raffle were: Devin Bisson, Ashleigh Fehmie, and Dustin Krajeski.

“It was so amazing to see so many Huntington Beach locals come out to support us. We at ISLA know that we could not exist without the support and donations of like-minded people who care about ocean safety and drowning prevention. We're doing serious work about a serious issue, but it is important for us to get together and celebrate our mission. Inundating people with the overwhelming numbers of preventable drownings, although true, can feel like a guilt tactic after a while and we are really trying to avoid that,” said ISLA volunteer and event planner, Pete Eich. “Instead, we want to focus on the good we do all over the world and let all our supporters know how much they contribute to saving lives. It's truly inspirational that all these beautiful people showed up to be a part of it.”
