SafePlans, has released a detailed analysis of the Sandy Hook shooting

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Dec. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- SafePlans, one of the nation’s leading education security and emergency planning consulting firms, has released a detailed analysis of the official State’s Attorney report on the Sandy Hook shooting.  SafePlans analysis pertains strictly school safety and is totally independent of the official report.

"Protecting schools can be incredibly complicated and is tragically imperfect.  This analysis provides a high level overview that every school principal and law enforcement official can apply to their schools” said Brad Spicer, president of SafePlans and former Missouri State Trooper.

Nothing in the report is intended to diminish the actions of the staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School (SHES) or imply fault for this tragedy lies with anyone other than the murderer.  The analysis is provided with the hopes the findings and recommendations will help education leaders and their public safety partners make our nations’ schools even safer and more secure.

Many of the recommendations contained in the analysis have been part of SafePlans’ Intruderology, active shooter prevention and response, training for some time.  “There is no one solution that protects schools from violent intruders” The Intruderology program is based on assessments and training programs conducted by SafePlans in over 20 states; including two of the nation’s 10 largest school systems. A core aspect of the program is revamping outdated lockdown plans and ensuring all staff understands how to prevent and respond to violent intruders.

“The basis of a lockdown is compartmentalization.  That works so long as occupants do not have direct contact with a violent intruder and are in a location they can secure.  When the level of contact or location is not conducive to a lockdown, staff must be trained in alternative options” Explains Spicer.   The response portion of SafePlans training explains how the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Run-Hide-Fight system is applied in a K-12 environment.
