It has been estimated that adults 16 yrs and older who are functionally illiterate create an estimated half a trillion dollars of added tax burden to the US fledgling economy. Labor productivity alone amounts to over 300 billion dollars. The cost in human terms-isolation, lack of self-confidence, and an inability to exercise basic rights greatly effects those with low literacy skills, their families and their communities.

Facts you probably did not know about Adult Literacy:

·        The largest numbers of illiterate adults in the US are white, native-born Americans.

·        Current spending per individual this year on Adult Literacy is $1.65

·        In the Bay area, 28 percent of the adult population is illiterate

·        The prison population represents the single highest concentration of adult illiterates

The Secretary of Education is correct. The nation is at risk! He very likely does not understand the nature of the risk that he describes. We are all held hostage to each other in this nation. There are no citizens, no matter how wealthy, no matter how removed they believe themselves to be, who will not be forced to pay a formidable price. The items I have summarized above may prove to be among the least important of these costs, but these matter enough to mandate a dramatic, urgent, and immediate response.
