Disasters happen without warning, so it is important for SME’s to plan what you they do if there is a crisis ahead of time. From an IT perspective, once everything is in disarray, it may be too late to recover lost data, or repair damage.

A disaster recovery plan doesn’t need to be costly or complicated, though it could save businesses from unnecessary losses, and help to continue to operate if something unexpected happens.

Jeremy shares tips for Business Owners of how tips on an Effective Data Recovery Plan.

1.    The importance of backing up data

Disasters happen without warning, so it is important to plan what you will do if there is a crisis ahead of time. Once everything is in disarray, it may be too late to recover lost data, or repair damage caused to your business by a systems failure or a fire. A disaster recovery plan doesn’t need to be costly or complicated, and it can save your business from unnecessary losses, and even help ensure you can continue operating if something unexpected happens.

2.    The elements of an effective backup system

Not all backup systems are created equal, and an ineffective backup system might not restore all your data if you need it. If you are trying to find the best backup system, there are a few things you might want to take into consideration.

·      Reliability. It is worth giving some consideration to what might happen if your backup system fails. Keeping backups on a server in your business premises is not advisable, but remote facilities can also be vulnerable to disasters. A good solution is to find a backup provider or system that stores files across a number of servers in different locations.

·      Enables quick recovery of essential files. It is a good idea to back up everything, even non-essential files, but to save time and costs, you can prioritise the data that is necessary to your day-to-day operations. You can make sure that is quick to retrieve, while non-essential files can be retrieved more slowly.

·      It works for your business. If your business is run entirely online then an online data backup system is probably going to be the best solution. If you primarily operate offline, you may be better off with a backup system that works offline. To be effective, your data backup solution needs to match the requirements of your business.

“Being very thorough and strategic with your back up strategy doesn’t mean spending a lot of money as solutions can be easily scaled, Business Owners will enjoy improved business continuity if the unexpected does happen “ said Jeremy Gumley, Cloud Computing Provider from EasyIT.
