MANNA Food Bank began life when, thanks to a vision of service, this grassroots local community effort to save food and feed the hungry. Individuals and companies alike donated food, money and in-kind services. In 1983 they began distributing food to 16 Agencies, from the basement of a dormitory at Eliada Home. From July to December that year they distributed 42,000 pounds of food. The following year, the number of agencies grew to 26 and 181,000 pounds of food were delivered. Today, MANNA continues to serve the people and communities of Western North Carolina. They are a member of Feeding America, and other organizations, including United Way of Henderson county and Rotary International. MANNA is a grass roots community based organization. In 2012 they distributed via 200 nonprofit partner agencies in 16 counties, over 11.2 million pounds of grocery products. They are able to provide enough food for over 1,000 meals an hour for every hour of the day, for every day of the year. For every $1 donated, they are able to provide food for three meals. The ability to do this is due to the community. In 2012, volunteers served 46,073 hours in support of MANNA – the equivalent of 22 full time staff members. Companies have also volunteered in-kind services. One local company in particular is Asheville Signarama. They have been working with Manna for several months. They have produced banners and signage for MANNA and their various campaigns, including the successful EMPTY BOWLS campaign. “Our 30th Anniversary banners and signage are all produced by the team at Asheville Signarama” commented Becky Upham, MANNA Food Bank Communications and Marketing Director. “They do a great job. They are fast and efficient and they give us great advice. They are able to handle all of our needs. What is also great is that they are as interested in serving the community as we are. Their attitude and commitment is a bonus and is exactly the relationship that enables us to continue to serve.” “MANNA’s mission is very important and we are honored to be able to serve and support them and their initiatives” “As long as there is a need, MANNA will continue to work to provide food. Our upcoming celebration not only honors everyone who has helped us, but is to look toward the future and our vision to continue to serve those in need.” MANNA’s celebration will be held at the Diana Wortham theatre, November 3rd from 2-4pm. The celebration is free, but seating is limited to 500.
