Follow on Google News | Baitul Salaam Network, Inc. 16th Year Observing National Domestic Violence Awareness MonthWe have started our annual campaign of distribution of lapel ribbons and literature written specifically for the Islamic community. This year we are mentioning Breast Cancer Awareness along with Domestic Violence Awareness due to both have a negative impact on families and more attention needs to be paid to both of these issues. This year we are working closely with Project Sakinah a part of the Dar Islam Movement out of New Mexico to bring more awareness to the Islamic community about domestic abuse and the negative impact that allowing the issue to go unaddressed in our faith based communities has on families in those communities. Every Friday in October our goal is to hand out educational materials and the lapel ribbons to people who attend Salatul Jumuah the weekly Islamic congregational service throughout metro Atlanta. The volunteers who assist us with this are a part of the communities that they hand out the materials. We are also hosting SisterSpeak'13 a program that gives Muslim women an opportunity to speak about many topics that have an impact on them and their families. This year SisterSpeak'13 will be held on Saturday, October 19, 10 am to 3 pm at the Camille Cosby Auditorium at Spelman College, 350 Spelman Lane in Atlanta. The theme is Our Roots. Guest speakers are Johnette Brooks who is a tribute specialist and geneologist and Zerqa Abid coordinator of Project Sakinah (via live feed) the program is open to the public.Tickets are $5 students/senior citizens (over age 62) and $10 for all others.
