As Many as 80% of All Windshields Are Incorrectly Installed

According to Debra Levy of the Auto Glass Safety Council, 75-80% of windshields are installed incorrectly.

HOUSTON - Aug. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- “Your windshield is really part of the safety system,” writes Levy. “And it’s really important that it be installed properly, as important as it is to install your brakes right.”

In his article “Repair or Replace Your Windshield the Right Way,” Phillip Reed, a senior consumer advice editor, touches on the importance of a properly installed windshield.

“An incorrectly installed windshield could pop out in an accident, allowing the roof to cave in and crush the car's occupants,” Reed writes. “Furthermore, when the front airbags deploy, they exert a tremendous force on the windshield and will blow out one that is not firmly glued in place.”

An investigation on windshield safety by the ABC News program 20/20 showed technicians incorrectly installing windshields. These technicians were not wearing gloves during the windshield installation process. Gloves are an important part of windshield installation, as the oils from the technician’s hands can prevent the windshield adhesives from bonding correctly. ABC News 20/20 also recorded technicians failing to use all the necessary bonding agents. Without the use of these adhesives, the windshield will not be secured properly. This means that in the event of an accident, the windshield will not be held in place.

For car owners who are looking for a windshield installation company, it is important to find a reputable company. Experts recommend contacting at least three windshield replacement shops, and asking a few important questions -beyond just the price. Asking if the shops offer OEM glass, as well as the recommended time that the vehicle should sit after the replacement, “If they say you can take the car right away, you should run in the opposite direction," Levy says. A car should sit at least one hour before being driven and sometimes up to 12 hours.”

While everyone loves bargains, when it comes to windshield replacements - cheap is not always the best option. When safety is concerned, it is important to ensure that only high quality materials are used, and that the highest standards of work will be adhered to.
