The Windshield is One of the Most Important Safety Restraints in A Car

The windshield is an important part of a vehicle’s Safety Restraint System (SLS), and has an important role in vehicle occupant safety.

Oct. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- An improperly installed windshield can have devastating consequences, Delta Auto Glass states on their website. “Your windshield’s job is important, but if the windshield isn't secured in place properly, the safety of the vehicles occupants will be severely compromised.”

According to Delta Auto Glass, when it’s time to replace the windshield it is important for car owners to find a repair facility that can do the job professionally. Their website lists a few things that car owners who are looking for a new windshield should ask glass replacement shops –to ensure that high standards will be adhered to.

Delta Auto Glass suggests asking the glass replacement company about their installation procedure. “Make sure you ask the shop how long you will have to wait before your vehicle is ready to drive away. If the shop tells you that it can be driven as soon as the windshield is installed, cross that shop off your list. The bonding agents that are used in windshield replacement need to set properly in order for the windshield to be considered safe.”

Since different adhesives set differently, the amount of time that windshields will need to set varies, but generally, the windshield will need to set for a one-hour minimum, and in some cases, it should be left overnight.

It is also important to ask if the technicians wear gloves during the installation, Delta Auto Glass advises. “Gloves are an important as the oils from the skin can contaminate the adhesives and can cause a windshield not to set properly.”

Finally, car owners should ask the shop about the replacement glass and products that the shop uses.

High quality seals and adhesives are important, and OEM glass is best. “When choosing a repair shop, make sure you ask which types of windshields they use, and try to find a shop that offers OEM glass,” advises Delta Auto Glass.

While some car owners may feel more comfortable using a dealer for windshield replacement, many dealers hire out glass replacement jobs to local glass replacement shops.

“By doing your own research and choosing a reputable shop, you can make sure that the shop you choose is qualified, rather than letting the dealer choose a shop for you,” Delta Auto Glass states.
