BEL AIR, Md. - July 29, 2013 - PRLog -- The Aberdeen AFCEA Chapter of Young AFCEAns is hosting their second 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk at Ripken Stadium on November 2nd to benefit Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives for the STEM Nights of the Northeastern Maryland Tech Council (NMTC) and the ‘Little Leapers’ program at the Harford County Public Library (HCPL), after raising an astonishing $7,000 in its first year. Registration is available here: http://beta.active.com/aberdeen-md/running/races/young-afceanaberdeen-5k-2013

The Young AFCEAns of the Aberdeen Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association (AFCEA) chapter seek to improve STEM education through the Harford County Public Library ‘Little Leapers’ program, which are pre- and early-literacy kits focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) education for kids 5 and under. The kits focus on chemistry, marine biology, and other sciences. Kits geared towards infants focus on colors, shapes, senses, baby animals and human physiology. More than 100 kits are currently distributed throughout 10 branches of the Harford County Public Library System.
Proceeds will go towards creating a new STEM Kit as identified by AFCEA, which will be distributed throughout the HCPL system in Harford County.

Another portion of the funds raised for this event will go to support the STEM Forum, which is a collaboration of businesses, government agencies, education institutions, and nonprofits brought together by the Northeaster Maryland Technology Council (NMTC) and Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG). The STEM Forum prepares Harford County students for critical, high-impact STEM careers. Funds from the 5K will support the STEM Nights & Beyond which are held during the school year in Harford and Cecil Counties to support STEM collaboration between the government, students and business.

One of the goals of The Aberdeen, Maryland Chapter of AFCEA is to promote educational opportunities. AFCEA coordinates and sponsors scholarships and programs that encourage science and technology education, actively engaging participation from educational professionals in the local elementary, middle, and high school community. AFCEA Aberdeen is a growing and dynamic, non-profit organization for local professionals. The chapter's primary mission is serving the community by raising funds to support meritbased
scholarships. With over 400 members and growing, the chapter serves Aberdeen Proving Ground, three Maryland counties—Harford, Cecil, Kent— and Southern Delaware. For more information, please go to http://www.afcea-aberdeen.org/
