Zahid Sheikh, MD Named Michigan Family Physician of the Year

(OKEMOS, Mich.) — Zahid Sheikh, MD, a family medicine and emergency room physician within the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, was honored by his family physician colleagues and the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) as the 2013 “Family Physician of the Year” at the Academy’s Scientific Assembly in Troy on April 13.

“From his compassion to his strong work ethic and humble demeanor, Dr. Sheikh exemplifies many of the qualities of an ideal family physician,” stated MAFP President Fred J. Van Alstine, MD, MBA.

Since 2004, when he became a founding member of the Health Unit on Davison Avenue (HUDA) Clinic in Detroit, Dr. Sheikh has been active on the clinic’s organizing and planning committee, as well as its board of directors. Three years later, he became the clinic’s medical director. The HUDA Clinic serves approximately 35 patients a day, three times a week and has grown to include specialty services such as ophthalmology, dental, chiropractic, mental health, pharmacy and lab services.

Dr. Sheikh has been a driving force behind the clinic’s mission to serve the uninsured of the Metro Detroit area at the highest medical care standards through his major donations, willingness to offer his medical services to those in need, tireless fundraising efforts and recruitment of volunteer physicians. He also mentors medical residents and students who come to the clinic to assist from local medical schools as part of their clinical rotations.

“Through this work with students and residents, Dr. Sheikh provides a place for the next generation to experience the heart of family medicine, so that we may all continue to serve the health care needs of Michigan citizens,” Dr. Van Alstine added.

The Family Physician of the Year award is presented to a physician who exemplifies the tradition of the family doctor and the contribution of the family physician to the continuing health of Michigan citizens.
