(OKEMOS, Mich.) — James F. Peggs, MD, a clinical professor and senior associate chair in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, was honored by his family physician colleagues and the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) as the 2013 winner of “The Archie Award of Excellence” at the Academy’s Scientific Assembly in Troy on April 13.

“We are thrilled to recognize Dr. Peggs for his contributions to, and achievements within, our specialty,” stated MAFP President Fred J. Van Alstine, MD, MBA. “Dr. Peggs has been an influential role model because of his devotion to educating medical students and family medicine residents. He truly exemplifies why physicians enter into family medicine in the first place—to care for others in all capacities. It’s a special honor to me to see Dr. Peggs receive this honor as he was a major influence in my education as a family physician.”

Beginning with his graduation from Wayne State University School of Medicine followed by a family medicine residency at Lancaster General Hospital in Pennsylvania, Dr. Peggs returned to Michigan to begin a career in family medicine that has spanned more than 30 years thus far. During this time, he has developed a clinical reputation of the highest order and received numerous awards for his clinical excellence. He also obtained a Certificate of Added Qualification in geriatrics, and he is regularly consulted for his general medical wisdom and expertise in this area.

Dr. Peggs has recruited more medical students into family medicine, volunteered his assistance with multiple underserved populations in Washtenaw County at the Migrant Health Clinic in Manchester, conducted school physicals for students at various high schools, worked with the Homeless Shelter and Faith in Action in Chelsea, and offered his experience and guidance to the Chelsea Retirement Community.

The Archie Award of Excellence is named in honor of the late Archie W. Bedell, MD, Ph.D., of Ottawa Lake. As a long-time member and past president of the MAFP, Dr. Bedell was a pioneer in family medicine education and a champion of under-represented constituents. The award was established to honor a Michigan physician who has distinguished himself or herself on behalf of the Academy and in the health care community.
