Shigella & Shigellosis Discussed in New Online Video

March 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of another online video to help educate the public about issues that may impact their health.  Their latest educational video discusses Shigella and risks from contaminated environments and food products.

Shigellosis is an infectious disease caused by a group of bacteria known as Shigella. Most people who are infected with Shigella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps starting a day or two after they have been exposed.  Each year, approximately 14,000 cases of shigellosis are reported in the United States, but because many milder cases are not diagnosed or reported, the actual number of infections may be twenty times greater.

“Most infections due to Shigella are the result of the organism passing from stools or soiled fingers of one person to the mouth of another person,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video.  “Shigella, and others types of bacteria such as E. coli, are also a concern when sewage has contaminated an indoor environment due to a flood or sanitary sewer overflow.  We hope this video helps to educate people about this organism and ways they can protect their families.”
