P.E.T. compared to How to Win Friends and Influence People by Two Beers With Steve's Cohost

Gordon Training International is proud to announce its participation in a podcast with Steve Patterson and Chris Stefanick of TwoBeerswithSteve and Judy Pardo, a psychotherapist and certified P.E.T. instructor.

Feb. 5, 2013 - PRLog -- Dr. Thomas Gordon first introduced Parent Effectiveness Training in the early 60s. His revolutionary methods of empathic communication and win-win conflict resolution have enabled families across the globe to live in peace and harmony.

Psychotherapist Judy Pardo first discovered the P.E.T. program over 20 years ago when she realized her desire for a more effective method of parenting her 2 year old son. Her experience with the program inspired her to apply the methods to her practice. Pardo discussed the differences of P.E.T. from other parenting methods with Steve Patterson and Chris Stefanick of Two Beers with Steve.

Pardo said that the success of the book relies on the fact that P.E.T. does not see parents and children as different, which she points out is a fundamental flaw in other parenting philosophies.

"Children are fully formed people. They have thoughts, they have feelings. They are the same as us, they just lack education and experience. That was part of Thomas Gordon's credo, his message, and Parent Effectiveness Training is really based on open and honest communication, direct communication, and mutual respect that everyone has the right to get their basic needs met. It is truly a democratic system, there is no place for power or authority in that. It really values the individual as an autonomous being at whatever age," Pardo said of the program.

Chris compares the success of the Parent Effectiveness Training program to another bestselling  book.

He said of the P.E.T. book: "I've read many books on parenting and none of them were that great. In fact, until I'd read P.E.T., the best parenting book I read was Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People. But that isn't specialized for parenting, it's just a general book on communication."
