Improve Quality Control with a Warehouse Control System

A warehouse control system is essential for quality assurance. With real time data management and continuous monitoring, the system maintains inventory and order accuracy, improves fulfillment rates, and helps meet corporate goals.

Jan. 3, 2013 - PRLog -- Imagine your customer’s frustration when they open the long-awaited package and find you’ve shipped the wrong product. Not only do you incur the additional cost of the return, but also and more importantly, you incur the wrath of the customer.

“The warehouse control system is designed to minimize such problems.  Through real-time data management, the system tracks and verifies inventory and orders each step of the way. The warehouse control system also provides alerts when out of parameter conditions occur,” states Rich Hite, President of QC Software, which offers innovative warehouse control solutions to leading companies throughout North America.

The system stores numerous SKU and item characteristics based on user-defined criteria. Details such as lot numbers, production date, received timestamp, dimensions, weight, shelf life, status, cycle count frequency, case pack quantity, storage type, and slot class are used for efficient tracking, storage and order fulfillment. As inventory is scanned, the warehouse control system verifies the scanned data against the information stored in the system.

The warehouse control system has numerous controls to ensure accuracy during the order fulfillment process. As orders are received from the Host, the system performs a soft allocation to verify that sufficient inventory is on hand and can place incomplete orders on hold. The system then plans, schedules and streamlines orders for greater picking efficiency and accuracy.  To maintain order integrity, the system verifies and tracks the status of each order throughout the warehouse.

Prior to shipping, the warehouse control system performs a weight check, generally using an in-line scale, to ensure the carton contents are correct for the order. The system knows the expected weight of each order based on the items picked. Boxes outside of a user-defined tolerance can be diverted for manual quality control inspection. The warehouse control system also verifies shipping information and applies customer-specific business rules to ensure order accuracy.

Finally, the system provides user-defined reports on demand to monitor and improve operational performance. This allows the company to more effectively meet customer demands and corporate goals.
