Although many of the answers were expected some surprised the executive team and stimulated this release. Of particular note was the lack of dental appliance storage solutions beyond the rudimentary plastic clam shell.  

The twenty-one question survey was divided into questions focused on demographics, daily routines in the practice, services offered, storage solutions, and patient management. Orthodontists who recommend or promote comprehensive treatment programs are growing in the orthodontic industry." Patients entering into a relationship with orthodontists have to weigh all the costs and benefits including policies and processes for replacement of retainers." stated Pat Brooks. From the survey, replacement costs range from $100 to $300 dollars and include significant lab work, chair time, and patient effort. It is very apparent that as the market grows, so does the need for proper storage and protection of retainers and other dental appliances.

Survey results also indicate patients lose and need to replace dental appliances in record numbers and are expected to pay additional charges. On the other hand, orthodontists don't have access to adequate product or service solutions to reduce or eliminate this problem.  Pat Brooks says, "Dental appliance storage is an afterthought in many treatment programs because practitioners simply don't have what is necessary and only recommend conditional solutions like a plastic box." Evaluating treatment from the patient's perspective is now a growing trend and orthodontists are beginning to take advantage of new ideas and processes.
