This is an article written by the Daily Bulletin: The Official Colfax Newspaper. An early-morning fire at 307 E Thorn Street Sunday did extensive damage to the residence and left a family of four homeless. The family was asleep in the residence. Colfax fire chief Ralph Walter said the family includes Aric and Charlotte La Fleur and their daughters, Sarah6, and Daisy Belle 3. They are not being housed at the Siesta Motel by the Red Cross. The fire started in the laundry room just after 6 a.m. Chief Walter said the parent's room is in the basement level of the house. They woke up to a cracking sound coming from the laundry room. The father was able to get up the stairs and rescue the two young girls from the smoke filled main level of the residence. The four occupants of the house were taken by ambulance to Whitman Hospital for a check. The Fire alarm was called in by a neighbor who resides at 309 Thorn. Fire crews arrived in time to vent the smoke from the burning house and were able to knock down the flames. Chief Walter noted the garage on the house was attached to a neighboring residence. Dry brush and grass on the north side of the Thorn Street Hill, behind the residence, also presented a hazard. Fire crews responded from Albion, Diamond and Steptoe. Total count of volunteers at the scene was 26. The fire blocked off Thorn Street for more than an hour. Crews put down water lines from hydrants along the street. At about 8 a.m. the crews opened up one-lane to traffic to provide access for residents on the upper levels of the hill. End
