By: www.pelmfg.com September 2012 PEL unleashes ‘Baby Jaws’ to UK bar scene Award-winning, under-the-counter bottle crusher reduces glass waste by 80% Recycling specialist PEL is launching Baby Jaws – an under-the-counter bottle crusher – to the UK. The machine reduces the volume of glass waste by a staggering 80%. Winner of the Shell award for innovation, Baby Jaws is a green, mean recycling machine, which helps pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafés save money by reducing waste disposal costs. Baby Jaws also keeps your neighbours happy by cutting down the clutter of clinking glass being chucked out at night. A lot of bottles? Crush them with Baby Jaws. Available at Stand 19Y60 Some Irish bars as well as some selected UK hotels and bars are already using the low-noise machine – also known as the PEL BB01 – which launches at RWM before rolling out to the UK and European market from this Autumn. One vocal champion of Baby Jaws is Oliver Hughes, CEO of Porterhouse Group which operates in Dublin, London and New York. When The Porterhouse one of Dublin’s busiest pubs and with such a vast amount of bottles to dispose of , found itself with limited space for bins, Oliver knew he had to find a waste solution. “I had done huge amounts of research into different machines but couldn’t find a suitable, small low-maintenance machine suitable in size to fit discreetly under the bar and at the same time do the work of a Trojan horse in crushing the bottles– then I discovered PEL,” says Hughes. “I called them immediately and had Baby Jaws installed at The Porterhouse in Dublin and rolled out throughout the group. "No more wheeling bottle bins through crowed bars. Bar staff are behind the bar all night. We are making money and saving money, no more segregating of bottle. Great Product." Oliver Hughes . The Porter House Pub Group. Baby Jaws allows publicans, club operators, hotel and restaurant owners to achieve: An 80% reduction in volume in their waste bins Huge savings in waste disposal costs and less bins needed Limit neighbours’ concerns over clinking bottles when bins are put out late – a long-standing problem for licensees in residential areas Low noise [42dbs] and low energy use – Baby Jaws takes a standard plug A financially- Oliver Hughes explains: “Publicans should have a capital allowance with your business of which you can offset the cost of the machine against your tax bill. As the allowance is £100,000 per annum, it’s likely that most publicans can claim on this. “The machine is very easy to install and use – you just put it on an even surface and plug it in. The bottles are fed into a continuous feeder and the cullet* is collected into a tote box underneath.” Baby Jaws stops automatically when the tray reaches 18kg in weight and needs to be emptied. The cullet can then be transferred into small bins for regular bin collection or indeed the tote boxes can be sealed and stacked for back hauling back to a depot in the case of large groups who wish to recycle large quantities of glass over multiple sites.. Baby Jaws is the first under-the-counter bottle crusher to come to the UK market and helped PEL scoop the award for entrepreneur of the year. . 2. PEL produces a larger multi feed bottle-crusher known as Jaws for large sites. This machine comes in 3 versions .BB03, BB04 and BB06. The BB06 carries a worldwide patent as the only bottle crusher on the market with an inbuilt extractor fan , making it usable in basements and enclosed areas without any dust issues. 3 Glass is one of the few materials that is 100 % recyclable. 4 The mixed cullet (a term used for crushed glass) is used in aggregrate for roads, sand substitute in concrete and speckled concrete. Or it is colour-separated and re-used for bottles. 5 Early adopters of PEL products in the UK range from the eco-friendly regional brewer St Austell, London’s Dorchester Hotel and Ritz Hotel , Radisson Hotel Group, Hilton Hotels, Holiday Inn Hotels, Oxford University, London’s Madam Tussauds and many more. 6 The RWM show has brought together industry leaders in waste management and facilities for many years – it is the most influential trade event of the UK waste industry.
