Verhagen, a sustainability sociologist, proposes a solution to the dual threat of climate change and financial crises—the Tierra Solution. He calls for a banking system without the privilege of money creation, a credit-based financial system governed by a Global Central Bank, and most importantly, a carbon standard for the international monetary system with the Tierra as its unit of account.
Just a few years ago when the economies appeared to be doing fine and climate change was simply a matter of discussion, The Tierra Solution might have been considered idealistic or academic. Now that circumstances have changed dramatically, this book will be seen as visionary and critical for the way we want to manage our societies. As Felix Dodds, executive director of the Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future, says in his foreword to this book: “Whatever happens in Rio, we have to change the way we are living on this planet.”
Verhagen’s book will appeal to concerned citizens who want to combat the economic crises and climate change with innovative solutions; it will offer critical reading to economists and public officials; and it will inspire international development experts and climate scientists to look differently at the dual challenges of climate change and financial crises. The value of this book is already evident from the praise it has received from many thought-leaders:
“It is a must-read for everyone who cares about the fate of the earth.”
—Sheila D. Collins, professor of political science emerita, William Paterson University
“Whether you agree or disagree… Verhagen is out to lay a new foundation for environmental and climate justice, with an overhaul of the international monetary system…”
—Rev. Arthur Simon, president emeritus and founder of Bread for the World
“A visionary and immensely practical approach to reforming today’s bubble finance and taming its global casino.”
-–Hazel Henderson, president of Ethical Markets Media, author and creator of The Green Transition Scoreboard ®
