May 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Bellingham, Washington, United States of America – John Hennessy is pleased to announce his sophomore novel At the End, a new post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller. Night 1: 12 billion taken. Day 1: Confusion. Night 2: 13 billion taken. Day 2: Panic. Night 3: 13 billion taken. Day 3: The fight for survival begins. In 2048, the human population borders 39 billion after the termination of the birth control industry, and the realities of overcrowding have sunken into the minds of the world, until billions mysteriously go missing. In the wake of civilization’s collapse, a trio of teenage gamers from Washington struggle to endure. Maggy, a strong-willed intellectual, leads Darrel and Félix, two shy geeks, on an expedition down the west coast, as they try to determine the source of humanity’s downfall. At the End is a fast-paced post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel geared toward teen+, featuring two strong female protagonists and two geeky male protagonists. The book's chapters alternate from Darrel's point of view and Maggy's point of view.
Author John Hennessy was inspired to write At the End last year in early 2011. “I began writing At the End shortly after a girl knocked on my apartment door with a big long spiel about how she need gas money to get to Seattle,” John says, “We knew she was a fraud, and come to find out, she was going around to every house in Bellingham trying to swindle people. The whole event got me thinking what if she was doing it as a scout, to see into people’s houses, marking doors with the most expensive items, so that later her posse could come and rob the place. Though that really has little to do with the plot line, it truly was the kick-starter.” What started out as a short story soon turned into full-length idea for a novel. “I wrote out the first chapter, calling it At the End. But as ideas kept coming, it just seemed too big, too good to end as a short story.” John pulled ideas from his classes at Western Washington, which proved valuable in creating his near-future Earth. “My freshmen year at Western, I did a project on the future of solar energy, learning about how hard, expensive, and long it would take to make solar stations in space a reality. It was a piece of information that really stuck with me.”
His lifelong passion for science fiction added to the mix. “As a fan of Firefly, Stargate, Battlestar Galaticta, Ender’s Game, and so forth, I really wanted to make my aliens unique. Naturally, my affinity for animals drove me to develop a creature based upon one of Earth’s species. I’ve been an admirer of big cats since I was little, and it just seemed logical to fashion my aliens, or “alions,” around them. Most aliens are always either humanlike in appearance, or buglike, so I opted for neither.”
