Follow on Google News | Downtown Temporary Art Venues Continue to Gain PopularityAround the country, pop-up art spaces take many forms, but all aim to draw visitors to the central business district.
By: Sharon F. Benigson, DowntownDevelopment.com Fortunately, a pop-up project need not be lengthy. Open for only 24 days, the Mt. Pleasant Temporium housed 34 artisans in vacant retail space, drew 6,800 visitors, and grossed $31,000. To boost visitor traffic, 23 free special events, including storytelling, crafting, book readings, and live music, were offered. And neighboring businesses joined in with related sales and specials. The theme of the Temporium was storytelling, which was woven into details of the retail spaces to provide an engaging visitor experience. Stories about the artwork and artisans were displayed, and visitors could contribute their own handwritten tales, which were posted in storefront windows as part of a public art installation. Details on the Temporium and art pop-ups in Pittsburgh and San Francisco appear in the March issue of "Downtown Promotion Reporter." # # # About the Downtown Research & Development Center For over 50 years, the Downtown Research & Development Center has acted as the information clearinghouse on practical strategies and tactics for revitalizing the hearts of our cities and towns.
