Jan. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- Ken Hammond, a resident of The Buckingham senior living community, was recently given an Honorable Mention award for LeadingAge’s Celebrate Age exhibit in Washington, DC.

LeadingAge, a national association representing not-for-profit organizations serving older adults, developed the exhibit in honor of their 50th Anniversary celebration at LeadingAge’s Annual Meeting.

More than 400 individuals were nominated to be part of this exhibit, which included stories and photos from each selected participant. A panel of older adults selected these individuals in early October based on their “zest for life and commitment to making a difference in their communities.” Those that received honorable mention were given a special awards plaque.

At the age of 92, Hammond created a wildlife sanctuary for the enjoyment of residents at The Buckingham and instructed Boy Scout Troops in the building of bird houses.   He also designed a three mile walking trail to encourage seniors to stay in shape.

In 2010, Ken received the President’s Volunteer Service Award from AT & T Pioneers, the company’s volunteer network, serving the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Last year, The Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitation Services recognized Ken for his production of over 200 Beeping Easter Eggs for The Blind Children Program.

“We are so proud of Mr. Hammond for his honorable mention award and his many accomplishments,” said Julie Fenske, executive director for The Buckingham.  “He has a wonderful spirit that is contagious to all those around him.”
