New York State Foreclosure Defense Bar Responds to Baum Law Firm Closing

Nov. 22, 2011 - PRLog -- NEW YORK—The New York State Foreclosure Defense Bar today issued the following statement in response to yesterday's announcement that Steven J. Baum, P.C. has reduced one-third of its workforce and is preparing to close its offices.

“The decision by Steven J. Baum, P.C. to close its offices is a mark that creditors' attorneys may be beginning to understand that they will be held to the Code of Professional Responsibility, the rules of the Court, and basic standards of decency and honesty.

“The Baum law firm has long been scrutinized for its questionable foreclosure practices, which has hurt many homeowners in crisis.

“Unfortunately, other firms that benefit from unscrupulous foreclosure practices are poised to jump in to fill the void. As foreclosure defense attorneys, we fear that many firms will pick up where the Baum firm left off and benefit in existing cases from the disregard for due process and mandatory settlement conference rights afforded homeowners under New York law. The inevitable result will be the continuing systematic destruction of our neighborhoods and the families who live in them.

“It is of utmost importance for all attorneys that are involved in the foreclosure process to respect the rule of law, court procedures and to be able to attest to the veracity of foreclosure complaints.

“The New York State Foreclosure Defense Bar will remain vigilant in our pursuit to defend homeowners’ rights to due process and to protect the American dream.”
