Nov. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Do you have plans to stain your wood deck, siding, log home, or fence in 2012? Get a jump start and save a bundle by purchasing your exterior wood stains and wood sealers now.  “Manufacturer prices are increasing in the next few weeks by 5 to 10% (or more in some cases) throughout the wood stain industry,” reports Steve of World of Stains.  “We wanted to get the word out to consumers who might want to save some money through buying early for their 2012 projects.” World of Stains offers a huge selection of high quality wood stains and wood sealants from leading manufactures, see http://www.worldofstains.com.  You can’t afford to wait!

Wood stain suppliers across the nation have no choice but to pass cost increases along to consumers by the first of the year.   Several factors are contributing to cost increases being borne by wood stain manufacturers, primarily having to do with increases in raw materials used in the production of wood stains. Packaging costs are also on the rise.  Following are some of the contributing forces that will result in price increases in just a few short weeks.

1.   Natural Oils: One of the main ingredients going into wood stains is natural oil such as linseed and soy oils. These oils are also used to manufacture alkyd resins, used extensively in wood stains and coatings. This year, the late and wetter than normal spring wreaked havoc on oilseed growers, dramatically reducing yields.  The dried ripe seeds of the flax plant are used in the production of linseed oil, a core wood preservative ingredient in many wood stains.  Similarly, soybean oil is a natural wood preservative that brings out the rich coloration of wood and is used in stains for wood decks, log homes, fences and more. A decrease of roughly 300 million bushels colliding with increased demand has pushed prices up by nearly $2.00 a bushel over 2010.   Clearly, the increased cost of this raw material will have an impact on the price of wood stains.

2.   Steel and Metal Containers: The cost of raw materials that go into manufacturing steel and other metal containers for paint and stain has increased significantly over recent years. At the same time, a decrease in demand due to economic conditions has made it difficult for container manufacturers to charge more, keeping them at unsustainably low pricing levels.   Having made inventory adjustments, container suppliers are now passing on the costs they held steady, which contributes to an overall increase in wood stain prices.

3.   Petroleum Prices: Trending nearly flat for more than 20 years, the price of crude oil significantly changed trajectories beginning in 1973. While there have been dips in oil prices, the trend has been a steady increase in costs, with the highest peak seen in June 2008.  Increases in petroleum products translate to increases in the manufacturing and shipment of exterior wood stains and other wood care products. When it comes to wood stains, petroleum prices impact access to core ingredients, the ingredients themselves, processing, and transportation.

4.   Chemical Components: Certain chemical compounds such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) have experienced sharp pricing increases. Ti02 is a white pigment used in nearly anything white including paints, coatings and stains.  Prices for acrylates, also used in the production of many paint and stain raw materials, remain high and coatings manufacturers will be passing these increased costs along.
