Using Potty Humor as a Teaching Tool

When Farts Had Colors, by Atlanta author Mark Lawton Thomas, is a new elementary-level chapter book about a topic that helps spread giggles as far-and-wide as it is heard and smelt!

PRLog - Nov. 8, 2011 - APEX, N.C. -- Readers of all ages will relate similar situations where the love of a particular food item is later processed for another’s enjoyment.

The book, scheduled to be released in December, 2011, will be complemented with a web site geared towards students and teachers with interactive flashcards, puzzles, awards and a “Grown-Up” guide to using the book in a classroom setting.  Of particular import, is “Merry’s Last Words”, a step-by-step guide on how to recognize when you’re being bullied.

The author and publisher wanted to take the opportunity to use to encourage children to not only read and enjoy, but to also “take-away” valuable lessons in character building, personal responsibility and action oriented solutions.   Mr. Thomas, a sixth grade language arts teacher at Sutton Middle School in Atlanta, said  “My hope is that kids will enjoy the book, but will also learn to recognize when bullying takes place and how to handle the situation in a safe way.”

When Farts Had Colors, by Mark Lawton Thomas, will make its debut at The Savannah Children’s Book Festival, sponsored by Live Oak Public Libraries, on November 19th, 2011.   Parents and teachers can reserve a copy through the website at:  http://www.WhenFartsHadColors.com or http://www.PeakCityPublishing.com

When Farts Had Colors is the story of 4th grader Lance Chance who hates Mondays. This particular Monday, Lance's mom coaxes Lance to school with his favorite sandwiches and a 'wish-kiss'. On his way to school Lance is tormented by "the biggest, meanest 4th grader ever to stalk the halls of Alfonso Orr Elementary School. Merry Maddox. Bully Extraordinaire…”A legend" and her posse of mayhem, the Crazy M&Ms.  ISBN-13: 978-1935711100 BISAC: Juvenile Fiction / Humorous Stories

Mark Lawton Thomas was born in Savannah , Georgia . After graduating from the University of Georgia , Mr. Thomas worked as a copy writer for various advertising agencies first in Atlanta , and then Manhattan . Eventually, he returned to the South and began writing a weekly column for Creative Loafing and voicing them for Georgia Public Radio. Somehow he found time to edit Contents magazine, an award-winning quarterly, as well.

Presently, Mr. Thomas is involved in his most challenging job to date:  teaching 6th grade language arts in Atlanta . When he isn’t teaching his little heart out, grading essays with his trusty, red Sharpie, or working on his next book, Mr. Thomas can be found fast asleep on a couch somewhere in Buckhead, GA.
