Sep. 29, 2011 - Independent Machine Company of Fairfield New Jersey has developed a 2-Position a shaftless center driven turret unwind accommodating maximum 70” diameter supply rolls secured on a 6” diameter drive side air pusher chuck which engages the core ID. The pusher chuck has motorized lateral positioning for the parent roll width adjustment to 64”. The supply roll is positioned between the chucks and the pusher chuck moves the supply roll onto the air chuck to secure the roll. One driven unwind position is actively unwinding the supply roll to a process and one position is in the “waiting” position. This simplifies changeover from the expired supply roll to a new roll. Each unwind position is driven by the AC follower drive through individual pneumatic clutches with laser diameter measurement and an electro/pneumatic dancer system capable of extremely accurate speed/tension control. By monitoring roll diameter and dancer position, a signal proportional to required tension is used as a trim signal to the drive for programmable constant tension as required. When the “running” roll expires the trailing end is pneumatically clamped and the turret is indexed so the “waiting” roll becomes the active unwind. The beginning of this roll is fed into the heat seal/splice assembly and held in place by the pneumatic hold down device so the splice can be made and the new slitting cycle begins.
