May 9, 2010 - PRLog -- IMC Develops New Heated Forming Die For Thermoplastic Prepreg

2-Roll Heated Forming module for  3” to 12” wide resin coated carbon tows  to form a continuous web of thermoplastic prepreg by metering control through heat and pressure has been developed by Independent machine Co. The matched 8” diameter alloy steel forming die rolls, hardened to nominal 60Rc and finished with .0001" T.I.R. are both electrically heated to 392°F with 1% distribution accuracy across the roll face. The female roll has adjustable separate flange rings that mechanically lock in a “rub out” position to the desired sized forming die roll. Die gap is controlled by a precision wedge block assembly at each journal and can be hydraulically loaded to more than 20,000 lbs. separating force. Gap positioning is displayed by .0001” digital indicators.  The flange rings can be unlocked and repositioned for die width and tolerance adjustment to provide a close tolerance forming tool.

The control panel is a separate NEMA enclosure with temperature and operating function displays. The unit has OSHA guarding and includes individual slip ring housings and filtered cover guards to minimize air born carbon contamination.
