By: Tanya Mandel CONTACT: Madie Fischetti, madiec@uga.edu, 706.255.5689 Northeast Georgia Landscape Architects Engaging in Public Awareness Event. WHAT: From Alaska to Florida and everywhere in between, landscape architects across the country will hold simultaneous events on August 17 to educate the public about their role in the environment around them. Northeast Georgia landscape architects and UGA Landscape Architecture students will be gathered in downtown Athens to participate in this event. WHO: The recent overhaul of the downtown Athens streetscape includes many innovative solutions designed by local landscape architects. Many people who walk across this intersection and down the sidewalks of this quintessential college town have no idea that landscape architects played a vital role in redeveloping this space. Large "sticky notes" will be posted in the downtown area letting passers by know that "This Space was Designed by a Landscape Architect". Landscape architects and students from the College of Environment and Design will be on hand with information and displays about the profession. WHEN: Wednesday, August 17 12 pm – 1 pm WHERE: Downtown Athens (College & Broad St), across from the UGA Arch WHY: Landscape architects design iconic places like New York City’s Central Park and the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C., but also downtown squares, local parks and even backyards. The simultaneous events are part of a larger campaign to help bring awareness to works of landscape architecture and the designers who create them.
