David Staudacher 312.350.9451 davids@svdpchicago.org CHICAGO – (Aug. 4, 2011) The volunteers at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul traveled more than 135,000 miles in 2010 to help the needy. Now, the members of Chicago area’s oldest charity are seeking the support of the community for its biggest fundraiser — The Friends of the Poor Walk. The Friends of the Poor Walk take place at two locations on two separate days in September. The first walk takes place on Sept 24, 2011 from 8 a.m. to noon at Lake Katherine, 7402 W. Lake Katherine Drive, Palos Heights. The second walk takes place on Sept 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at DePaul University, 2250 N. Sheffield, Chicago. “The funds raised through the Friends of the Poor Walk stay in the local community to assist with programs and services for the poor and underprivileged,” Participants have the choice to walk at a north or south location. They also have the option to select the conference and/or council to represent. The Friends of the Poor Walk is a National Program coordinated by the Development Team at the National SVDP Office. The inaugural event took place in 2008 with the purpose of providing local Conferences and Councils the framework to host an event that would raise funds for their Conference or Council. The event has grown each year, attracting more than 18,000 walkers, raising more than $1.4M with more than 1,000 Conferences and Councils across the country participating.
