The number one source of stress while at work is personal finances. Employees make more personal calls about money such as calling debtors, on the internet viewing their personal accounts, sending personal faxes and they talk about the issues longer with coworkers.  Forty-percent of employees waste 23 plus hours a month of work time dealing with debt matters. Despite its social acceptability, debt problems cause stress and anxiety that sap workers’ productivity which cause health problems and increase the likelihood they will leave a job in search of better pay.

Among all employees surveyed, more than half (53%) say they are concerned about financial security for their family in the event: (a) they are no longer able to work due to disability or serious illness; (b) their own premature death (49%) or (c) in the event of their spouse’s/significant other’s premature death (48%).

Employees’ greatest concerns about retirement are that they will outlive their retirement savings (48%) and, consequently, will have to continue working either full or part-time (48%).

Nearly one-third (28%) of employees surveyed say they would like their employer to offer a wider array of voluntary benefits that they could choose to purchase and pay for themselves. The most important benefits strategies among 20% of employers were to “provide a wider array of voluntary benefits.”

A study conducted by Professors Kim published in the Journal of Compensation and Benefits, showed that 80 percent of respondents who had received a combination of workplace financial education and individual financial counseling felt they had a more adequate knowledge of personal finances.
