J&C Joel sets the scene for performing arts in South Africa

May 12, 2011 - PRLog -- The Vuyani Dance Theatre (VDT) is a contemporary African dance company performing on South Africa’s theatre circuit and is the brainchild of internationally renowned dancer, choreographer and director Gregory Maqoma.

The VDT’s Four Seasons performance explores some of the intricacies of the human condition and our relationship with the planet through dance accompanied by live backing musicians.

J&C Joel South Africa supplied the VDT with a 12m x 9m drape made from white sharkstooth gauze (ST001) behind which the musicians played on stage. Manufactured specifically for Four Seasons, the drape was made with a heading of eyelets and tape ties, hemmed sides and a pipe pocket base.

Sharkstooth gauze is an eight-point cotton scrim used for stage lighting effects. When lit from the front at an oblique angle the scrim appears opaque, masking the band at the rear of the stage. When lit from behind the gauze appears transparent, allowing the musicians to be dissolved in and out of the performance.

Four Seasons showed the full scope and capabilities of sharkstooth gauze, as the fabric was not only used as a scenic device to add depth to the stage, but also as a projection surface on which the various animations telling the story of the piece were shown.
