Donnaray was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, but moved with her parents to the Bronx N.Y. in the early 90s to explore all possibilities that life had to offer. As a lover of track and field to physical wellness and nutrition, Donnaray has transformed into a master of the Dancehall dance culture. She succumbed not only to the Reggae musical genres, but also on a grander scheme, she embraces the institutions of an entire culture in which Art, Music, Dance, Community and politics collided. As a native of Jamaica in the cultural ferment of New York, she feels challenged to test the boundaries of her cultural expression.

HSM: Why is dancehall so important to you?

Donnaray: “As a native of Jamaica, it’s my duty to share the passion of dancing and what it brings in a positive way to the fellow youths in my community, as well as, the melting pot of this place we call America. I feel dedicated to the dance community so I donated all my free time implementing projects and programs that enrich the lives of those around me.”

HSM: What are your goals?

Donnaray:   My goals are to strengthen Dancehall and Reggae performers internationally by conducting business with an anti corruption policy in the field of dance. I feel that’s most important. People need to know we are providing all possible support for existing open and honest competitions in the world. My focus is to coordinate, support and enhance the work of existing dance organizations and preserve the Dancehall/Reggae culture.
HSM: How long have you been in existence, and how do you plan to do this? That seems like a lot of work.

Donnaray: “ Dancerzblvd was founded in 2003 to be a vehicle of promotion, as well as, facilitating Reggae/dancehall as a business. Dancerzblvd is a place where raising the popularity and attractiveness of the dancehall genre comes first.  We are a diverse company of innovative and creative multi-cultural dancers on an ambitious undertaking, but we truly love what we do. We formed a dance alliance ready to take on the world! Our company is dedicated to dancers and choreographers well versed in the concepts and aesthetics of dancehall/reggae dance. This means we focus on history and culture as well as craft. Dancerzblvd illustrates the paradox of Jamaica’s culture; creating much from little.
Dancehall’s surface, depth and evolution is emblematic of Dancerzblvd’s mission. We are an ethnically diverse company tracing the migration of this culture from separate and isolated folk roots to a context now rising to find a prominent place in today’s world.”

HSM: Where do you begin with something like this?
Dancer
Donnaray:  “By encouraging cultural awareness through promoting the unique characteristics of the Dancehall/Reggae legacy, and encouraging Dancehall expression in diverse communities throughout the world Japan, Canada, France, Germany and so on. Our company is committed to providing the best and most comprehensive tools necessary to take the performance culture to the next level. That means professionalism! Which includes larger venues to showcase performers in a safe, secure, and healthy atmosphere. This allows the artists to grow as well as creating a cohesive international community to strengthen the foundation of the cultural performing arts.

HSM: Thank you Donnaray we at Hot Stepz Magazine wish you continued success!
