Sony Ericsson Xperia Play - Release Date And Pre Order Availability

OVERVIEW

The Xperia Play is the world's first fully certified PlayStation phone combined with the latest operting system from Google - Android 2.3. Although there have been many before it, the Xperia Play certainly looks the real deal - it's first great attempt at a smartphone / mobile gaming platform and hybrid. The xperia play has a silde out gaming pad underneath the lush 4 inch screen. The slide out control pad looks just like a typical PlayStation controller, with the inclusion of a d-pad, analogue sticks, shoulder buttons and the typical four shape buttons.

The Xperia Play is no PSP however. unlike the PSP, it doesnt have a UMD or cartridge slot - games are downloaded via the Android market. For gaming on the go, the following games are included on the phone 'out of the box': Tetris, The Sims 3, Asphalt Adrenaline 6, Bruce Lee and Star Battalion Sony are also claiming over 50 titles will be available to download at launch.

Thankfully, all that gaming goodness is backed up with some pretty impressive hardware specs. A1 GHz Scorpion ARMv7 processor is supported by a Adreno 205 GPU. Sony are also claiming over 5 hours of 3D game play from a single charge – an impressive feat for such a powerful device.

Lets not forget that as well as a mobile gaming platform, the Xperia Play is also a smartphone. And with Andoid 2.3 at it's heart it's a very good one. It has all of the features expected from a high end smartphone such as a 5.1 megapixel camera with flash, GPS and geo-tagging. Battery performance is also good for such a powerful device - 6 hours 25 minutes can be expected on 3G networks while standby time is rated at a whopping 413 hours.

The Xperia Play weighs in at 175 grams and its full dimensions are 119 x 62 x 16 mm. It will be available in black and white.
