Feb. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Let me ask you:  If I lose ten pounds of bodyfat, but gain ten pounds of muscle tissue, then has my BMI gone up or down?  Neither, it stays the same.  So, when your physician says that your BMI is too high and that you need to begin strength training and cardiovascular exercise, keep in mind that, while everyone should be exercising regularly, the BMI scale is non-telling of your fitness level.  As you see in this example, major change in the body may not be noted on the BMI scale, therefore making it obsolete and very misleading.

This statement may later serve to revolutionize the medical approach to lifestyle change and weight management.  After all, my company, Perfect Personal Training, has been the national leader for in home personal training for many years, and we've coached thousands of clients to incredible success.  But I can tell you, we not once took a BMI score seriously, because we are very aware of all the weight gain that comes with fat loss.  See below:

- Bone mineral density increases with nutrition and weight bearing exercise
- Water weight increases with more appropriate nutrition and water intake
- Muscle tissue hypertrophies with strength training, improving metabolism
- The heart sometimes becomes more dense, and more heavy, as it gets healthier

All of these causes some level of weight gain, but the only weight you're losing on an appropriate exercise regimen is the bodyfat itself.  Therefore, your absolute scale weight is containing all of these factors, and since BMI is really just a height:weight ratio, it just doesn't understand or explain the amount of fat loss occuring.

The medical community uses the BMI scale because of it's simplicity.  For non-exercisers, it has some level of accuracy because we know that there will very rarely be much lean tissue on a non-exercising person (until he or she begins exercising and gaining muscle, of course).
