Your North Carolina Wills, Trusts, & Estates Explained Simply:
Important Information You Need to Know for North Carolina Residents

In the wake of the Great Recession, Americans are not only struggling to meet everyday needs, long-term plans are suffering as well. A recent Lawyers.com survey shows that the percentage of Americans possessing estate planning documents has dropped to only 51 percent, with three quarters of those surveyed stating that the current downturn has made it even more difficult for them to plan for the future and nearly half stating they are more focused on "the essentials" right now.

According to the 2010 survey, only 35 percent of Americans report having a will — a 10 percent drop from 2007 — and only 18 percent of people have trust documents arranged — a 13 percent drop from the 2007 statistic. Seven in ten Americans believe that in today’s economic climate, it is more important to save money than plan for their financial futures.

Though this thinking is understandable during a recession, it is cause for concern, as the unexpected can happen during any economic state. With the average funeral costing $6,500, if a family member dies without making final arrangements and planning his or her estate, loved ones can find themselves in a worse financial situation than before.

Estate planning is important no matter your situation. Many people put off planning their estate because they think the process is too complicated or expensive to pursue. And though working with a estate attorney is an important step, much of the planning can be done before you take that step.

In Your North Carolina Wills, Trusts, & Estates Explained Simply: Important Information You Need to Know for North Carolina Residents, author Linda C. Ashar, attorney at law, has crafted an estate planning primer — specifically catered to the needs of North Carolina residents. You will learn the basics of estate planning and arm yourself with knowledge that can save you time and money. You will learn all the necessary legal jargon and how to choose which type of will or trust best suits your situation. More importantly, you will be taking the first steps to protecting your loved ones in the event of your death.

This book is available for review as a hard copy or PDF, excerpting, resale, and per inquiry advertising. High-resolution images are also on hand upon request.
