Steven Greenhut: ‘We are at debt levels that are impossible to pay back'

Jan. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- Steven Greenhut, author of Plunder: How Public Employee Unions are Raiding Treasuries, Controlling Our Lives and Bankrupting the Nation, joins the ‘Holistic Survival Show’ in a topic about big government, public unions and regulations.

Over the course of episode number 27, Greenhut focuses on California as a prime example of a state in turmoil - with a large government, massive unfunded liabilities and strong unions. He explains that by the time the public finally understands the new laws and regulations being passed, the decisions have already been made. “It seems like down-right thievery,” Greenhut states.

Greenhut goes on to explain that massive pension increases quietly moved forward due to the fact that the city staff negotiated with the unions. “A lot of folks in power have manipulated the system in their favor and kept the public in the dark.”

In California, it is estimated, by Stanford University, that the unfunded pension liabilities reach close to $500 billion dollars. “The State’s democrats want to simply raise taxes, but I believe it will drive out businesses,” explains Greenhut. “Maybe like in Atlas Shrugged, the producers will go on strike!”

When asked how we can actually unwind the large government, the massive debt levels and the many regulations enacted, Greenhut simply says, “I have no idea. I think we just have to reach the hearts and souls of the public through our writing, podcast shows and other means.”

Jason Hartman and Greenhut both agree that all of the regulations seem to be well-intended from the very beginning, but that it almost always turns into a mess.
