Harvey Mackay on job hunting and interviewing during the ‘Speaking of Wealth Show'

Guest, Harvey Mackay, touches on ideas from his books “Swim with the Sharks” and “Get Your Foot in the Door,” which both relate to job searching, networking and interviewing.

Mackay’s interview begins with a concern over the amount of unemployed and underemployed people in the United States. He explains that 14.8 million people are looking for jobs and 6.3 million have been looking for over seven months.

Throughout the episode, Mackay urges listeners, and readers of his books to differentiate themselves from the majority of job-seekers. “Find a unique way to get in front of someone and be creative,” he says, implying that those who think and act outside-the-box will likely be viewed differently by employers or customers. During the topic of interviewing, Mackay even suggested creating a personal video as one way to gain maximum exposure during an interview process.  

Mackay also stresses the importance of building a large network. “Meet as many people as you can and have the desire to learn about what makes them tick. You should also be thinking, ‘what can I do for this person’ while expecting nothing in return.”

Concluding the launch episode, Mackay gives advice on how to achieve success. “You are not in school once in your life, you are in school all of your life!” Mackay exclaims. “Read the best books ever written, including self-help book. A person should really turn their car into a university; most people spend an aggregate time of three years in their car, so why not listen to books on tape to enhance your education?” Mackay also believes that mentors and coaches can play a significant role in enhancing professional skills as a businessperson.
