June 24, 2010 - PRLog -- Alexandria, VA  – Seven-year-old jewelry artist and budding philanthropist ,Mia Rose Thackston, has partnered with the Washington Mystics to help fight hunger and poverty throughout the world.

On Sunday, June 27, 2010 the Washington Mystics will be holding their annual Princess Party, an event designed to pamper little girls while also introducing them to women’s professional basketball.

After meeting Mia Rose and learning about her fundraising efforts, Washington Mystics Account Executive, Sarah Novak, invited Mia Rose to attend the princess party where she will show her beautiful jewelry creations and will donate a generous portion of her sales to Heifer International.  For more information about Princess Party or Washington Mystics contact: Sarah Novak snovak@washmystics.com or 202-527-7517.

Following in the footsteps of her mother, Alexandria-based jewelry designer Trish Thackston, Mia Rose started her own jewelry business in December of 2009.  In January of 2010, she decided that she wanted to use her craft to help make the world a better place by donating a portion of all of her sales to charity.   She selected Heifer International as the charity because the work that they do “helps other children and families who don’t have as much as I do.” Through the “passing of the gift,” that is a part of Heifer International’s programs, each donation has the ability to benefit many people beyond the family that receives the initial gift of livestock and training.

Mia Rose set an initial goal of raising at least $520 for Heifer International with her jewelry sales by December 2010.  She selected that amount because it was enough to donate one heifer and one flock of chicks.  At her first jewelry show, January 2010, she dedicated all of her sales towards her goal and managed to sell enough jewelry to donate more than $200.  Since then, she has had at least one show each month, with 25% of the sales going to Heifer International.

Through these jewelry shows, as well as online sales, Mia Rose has already met and surpassed her goal, having donated more than $600 with six more months to go!  She is hoping to be able to make another large donation to Heifer International after the Washington Mystics Princess Party.
